Vi Hunter of Akron, Ohio had the idea to have her own doll figure produced and so she had the Jenny mold created. The Jenny figure measures about 4 1/4” tall and is solid. Since she did not own a glass factory, she contracted Mosser Glass in Cambridge, Ohio to press a variety of colors for her and she would do her own promotions, sales, shipping, etc. She debuted the first three Jenny colors at the Victim Assistance Annual Antique Show and Sale in Akron, Ohio on March 18th, 1979.
Mosser Glass produces high quality glass and is adept at producing many interesting and beautiful colors. They made one color each month of the new Jenny mold for Hunter with a total of twelve for 1979 plus an annual bell. Each was marked with an “H” on the lower part of her skirt on the back side. The 1979 series were not dated on the underside but the three subsequent years were dated – a photo is included showing the year marks that were pressed into the bottom.
One of the first things a collector notices about glass items is the variation that can be found with any one color. Hand-made glass is not a precise science and a color batch can vary from one day to the next (sometimes throughout the day) for a variety of reasons. When two or more colors are hand-swirled together which is commonly called a slag color, variations are the norm. It is not unusual to find a slag Jenny with little or no secondary slag color showing.
In 1981, a boy counterpart was introduced called Josh and measures about 4 3/8” tall. It is marked with the H logo near the bottom on its back right side and the year is pressed into the center of the bottom. In 1981 and 1982, each color made in the Jenny mold was also produced in the Josh mold.
In 1983, a miniature sized Jenny was introduced which is about 2 1/8” tall and 23 colors where produced over a three-year period. These mini Jennys, as they are usually called, have the H logo but are not marked with the year they were produced.
Starting in 1979, an annual bell was produced using the Jenny mold but instead of being solid was produced with a bell cavity for a clapper. These bells were not marked with any year indication. Officially, one bell color was made for ten years but unofficial bell colors can also be found.
